Issues with Occupational Health Services

Family doctors should be able to link work and health, so training in this area would be necessary. This would enable and authorize them to diagnose work-related illnesses. Currently, the occupational health service provider operating in the market is almost a monopoly, resulting in unreasonable prices, long waiting times, and low quality.

I also had to visit the occupational health doctor earlier this year as part of mandatory requirements. Paperwork or digital records can tolerate anything. What benefit do I get from the occupational health nurse trying to extract answers from me by asking questions—let it be noted that the questions asked by the nurse were not related to my health (for example, “Do you like your job?”, “I understand you have machines there, etc.”). Why can’t this person read the company introduction where she is doing additional work? That way, she would be more competent and could better advise patients.

As a patient, I also don’t benefit when the occupational health nurse uses copy-paste from existing conditions or information in the digital record when summarizing the examination. I also believe that a nurse should know and be able to interpret/understand the meanings of specific diagnoses

That’s why occupational health doctors exist—they should not only be able to interpret test results but also have the capability to monitor and treat diseases, rather than referring the patient to a family doctor for every abnormal test result.

Visiting a doctor while healthy should become voluntary. A doctor’s approval should not be required for employment unless there are specific health requirements mandated by law for certain professions.

7 thoughts about the healthcare sector’s main problems

  1. Health concerns are not solved by the healthcare sector alone in the big picture, but rather by the economic success of society and the understanding at all levels of society that investing in health is worthwhile.

Emergency services for a fee

My recommendation would be to make ambulance services paid. Since I work in the ambulance service in Tallinn, I see how many calls are not emergencies but rather a convenience service. It's easy to call 112, and three staff members come and give paracetamol – people have no sense of …

Three years of mandatory work in Estonian healthcare

A significant part of the shortage of doctors is due to the fact that they go abroad to work after graduating. The shortage of nurses, on the other hand, is caused by the fact that they move to the private sector, for example, to aesthetic medicine. If a requirement were …
